Approved STCW Basic Safety Courses
What is STCW?
An international change in training procedures requiring people
with prior experience to demonstrate proficiency in basic safety
or obtain practical skills through a structured learning program.
Who
is affected by STCW?
Personnel
working on the following vessels if they operate seaward of the
boundary line (The boundary line separates inland and near coastal
waters, for licensing purposes):
1. Commercial
Vessels over 200 gross tons.
2. Passenger vessels subject to 46 CFR, sub-chapter H(>l00 gt.).
3. Uninspected towing vessels that are subject to the Officers Competency
Convention.
4. Vessels sailing foreign.
Who Needs Basic Safety Training?
Required of everyone needing to meet STCW requirements who began
their
seagoing service after February 1, 1997.
Course Descriptions:
Basic Safety fulfills the requirements for Standards of Training,
Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW 95). This course encompasses
all five topic areas in the Basic Safety program. The five segments
may be taken together or individually.
Basic
Fire Fighting
A 2 day
course including 8 hours of lecture and 8 hours of practical
training on the fire ground fighting fires with various extinguishing
methods.
Personal Survival
1-1/2 days
(12 hours) of classroom and in-the-water practice with water
survival techniques and lifesaving equipment including life
rafts and survival suits.
Elementary
First Aid
1 day (8
hours) of basic first aid techniques for injury assessment,
immediate care and CPR.
Personal
Safety/Social Responsibility
1/2 day
(4 hours) of basic emergency procedures, alarm signal recognition,
lock out/tag out, personal protective gear and social responsibility.
STCW / USCG Approved Basic Safety Course Requirements:
Course Attendance: 100% required
Testing: All testing is done with New England Maritime. You DO NOT test with the Coast Guard.
Certification: Upon successful completion (attendance and passing required exams), you will receive a New England Maritime Certificate of Training.
Note: Individuals who began sea service prior to February 1, 1997 need to complete Basic Safety Training at some point if they wish to advance to a license or certificate that will have an STCW certificate valid after February 1, 2002

Cancellation Policy: Deposits are refundable if written cancellation is received more than 14 days prior to course start date, less an administration fee of $100 and the cost of books. Cancellations made 14 days or less from the course date will forfeit full deposit plus cost of books received. A student requesting a move to a future class will be assessed a $100 fee and cancellation policy will remain in effect as of original class date. A full refund if class size minimum is not met.
